Q. Just a few months are left for JEE Main. What preparation plan and strategy do you suggest to the students to balance their Class XII board preparation along with JEE preparations?

Ans: At this stage, many students are anxious about simultaneously balancing the Boards along with their JEE Main preparation and often think "Is 3 months enough for jee mains". Though for a layman the syllabus remains the same for both, JEE requires in-depth knowledge of concepts whereas in board exams student needs to memorize these concepts at length to produce desirable results.

Q. Do you think to study just the NCERT syllabus would be sufficient for a student to clear JEE Main and follow up on JEE Advanced? Please explain.

Ans: Only solving NCERT books may not be sufficient. NCERT textbooks are good for subject wise type questions. Proper training for online & offline modes of answering the exam is also important. There is a big gap between the level and pattern of questions asked in JEE Advanced and JEE Main. For JEE, practice as much as you can. This will help in strengthening all important concepts. For JEE Main, many students tend to think that if they prepare for JEE Advanced it is enough for JEE Main, but this is not correct. While preparing for JEE Main, they will have to cover additional topics from the CBSE syllabi as well. Also, JEE Main tests the aspirants for their speed and accuracy.

Q. What books would you suggest to the JEE Aspirants for preparation in this phase of preparation?

Ans: It is advisable not to start new books in the last few months. One must also join an All India Test Series for better time management and accuracy. Students must seek guidance from their faculties at the institute they are associated with. However, students may additionally refer to the following books in case of conceptual doubts in case they are not associated with a reputed institute:

Q. What are the important topics for Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics that you think students must focus on to perform well in JEE Main?

Ans: The syllabus of classes 11th & 12th contributes about 45% and 55% of IIT-JEE question papers respectively. When you are preparing all chapters of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, stress may be given on the following topics.

Mathematics:
Quadratic Equations & Expressions, Complex Numbers, Probability, Vectors, and Matrices in Algebra; Circle, Parabola, Hyperbola in Coordinate Geometry; Functions, Limits, Continuity, and Differentiability, Application of Derivatives, Definite Integral in Calculus.

Tip:
Try to do as much as quality problems as possible to develop a sound confidence level.

For the complete JEE Main Mathematics Syllabus

Physics:
Mechanics, Fluids, Heat & Thermodynamics, Waves & Sound, Capacitors & Electrostatics, Magnetics, Electromagnetic Induction, Optics, and Modern Physics.

Tip: Practicing quality problems is the key to success in this subject. If concepts are clear, then this subject becomes all the more interesting.

For complete JEE Main Physics Syllabus

Chemistry: Coordination Chemistry & Chemical Bonding in Inorganic Chemistry, Electrochemistry, Chemical & Ionic Equilibrium, and Mole Concept in Physical Chemistry and Organic Chemistry.

Expert tip:
Just go through the periodic in general and read NCERT for Inorganic Chemistry. For the Organic part, first, build up your all basic concepts and then start doing lots of practice. And for the Physical part, practice as many numerical as you can.

For complete JEE Main Chemistry Syllabus

Recommendation: Students are advised to avoid selective study in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, as the number of questions is more in the objective papers where there is an intermingling of concepts from various topics.

Q. As the 40% weightage given to the normalized score of class 12th marks has been scrapped since last year, do you suggest some change in strategy this time for aspirants in comparison to how it has been so far?

Ans: Scrapping of Class XII weightage in JEE Main will certainly benefit those students who were serious about JEE Main and who may not fare well on boards. The two exams are different in terms of the pattern of paper and the level of questions asked. Here the deserving students will get the desired rank. In fact, this step is a boon for serious aspirants. The preparation strategy should be different this time and must be goal oriented. If the aspirant wishes to do well in JEE Main, he/she must utilize the time gap between board exams smartly in solving questions related to exam and solving JEE Main Mock Tests, as the key to success in JEE Main is speed and accuracy while solving objective type questions. Here the NCERT textbooks may be referred to cover the additional topics asked in JEE Main which are not included in JEE Advanced.

Q. What changes in strategy should a student need to bring in preparation as time passes? What importance does solving sample paper hold?

Ans: Last 3 months should generally be utilized to consolidate one’s preparation by focusing on problem-solving and overcoming the weaker areas in preparation.

Q. Time is a critical aspect in completing JEE Main exam. Any suggestions on how a candidate should go about answering the questions since negative marking exists and students need to know how best to tackle sure answers & doubtful ones to ensure maximum marks?

Ans: Time management while attempting the actual JEE paper will definitely be a deciding factor for getting the desired rank in JEE. Broadly speaking we can divide a question in 3 ways. Easy (the ones which you can solve in maximum of 60 seconds or so), Moderate (the ones which would require 2 to 3 minutes but you are sure you can solve them), and Tough (the ones which you feel that you can’t solve based on your current knowledge). One must divide the time in such a way that the easy and moderate ones are completed first and still time is left to think and crack the tough ones.

To know more about the JEE Main exam guidelines

Q. If there is a set of elements that would ensure success in cracking JEE Main – what would they be as per you?

Ans: Time Management: Proper planning is most important for timely preparation and dealing with study pressure.

One must also keep the following points in mind:

  • Divide these crucial remaining weeks aptly in the three subjects.

  • Prepare a chapter-wise and topic-wise revision schedule.

  • Create short notes and list all formulae & points to remember. This will help in quick revision before the examination.

Correct Methodology: The correct approach for those appearing for the first time or second time is to stick to one source and not to refer to the multitude of books/ study material available in the market. For example, it is sufficient to go through study packages, IIT-JEE archives, review packages, workbooks, grandmasters package/equivalent, AITS/AIITS series, etc. if you have enrolled in a training institute. To reap the benefits, the students should remain focused throughout the preparation period with a positive attitude to study with utmost concentration.

Focus on your Goal: The key to the right preparation is proper and timely planning. JEE Main Toppers learn from their weak areas and practice well in time to improve by all possible means. A correct attitude and acute focus is the key to be a topper. Toppers divide their preparation time accordingly. They stick to a single system of preparation and have faith in themselves. Thus, they gradually build up their confidence level and are geared up to crack any difficult question. They ensure solving all previous years’ papers keeping their concepts crystal clear. Practice, Practice, and Practice for gaining perfection.
