“We provide curriculum for applied learning”, says VIT-AP Chancellor Dr. G. Viswanathan

ViswanathanWhile many reports claim to have dealing with a dearth of industry-ready engineers, VIT-AP is reporting record-breaking placement figures. The reason Dr. G. Viswanathan, Chancellor, VIT-AP puts forth is that the institute provides curriculum for applied learning based on industry inputs. He reasons that in order to produce quality engineers, a good institution must be given priority over a good branch. In an interaction with Careers360, Dr. Viswanathan spoke about various aspects of the education arena, facilities at the newly established campus in A.P., expansion plans and much more.

Dr. Viswanathan who is the founder-chancellor of VIT University completed an Advanced Management Programme at Harvard Business School in 2003. With a bachelors and Masters Degrees in Economics from the prestigious Loyola College, Chennai,  Dr. Viswanathan further earned a degree in Law from the Madras Law College. Dr. G Viswanathan founded Vellore Engineering College in 1984 with an intake of 180 students and it has now evolved as a university with two campuses. Over 25,000 students are enrolled in 53 undergraduate and graduate programmes with nearly 16,000 residing on the campus.

VIT-AP will have common admission counselling for all the VIT campuses in Guntur in addition to Vellore and Chennai.

B.Tech disciplines offered at VIT-AP:

Q2. Do you further plan to expand the portfolio of disciplines in the coming years?

Ans: We have huge expansion plans for VIT-AP. We will be offering Bachelor’s, Master’s and Ph.D. degree programmes in all branches of engineering as well as other disciplines. We will offer degree programmes which provide a strong career and a bright future for the students.

Q3. Any specific reason VIT has chosen AP as the state to set up the first campus outside Tamil Nadu when many are setting up universities in the north?

Ans: We have set up VIT-AP based on the requests of the A.P. Chief Minister Hon’ble Shri Chandrababu Naidu and many of the students and parents. As the campus is located in the new world-class city of Amaravati, we are of the view that the city has a huge potential for attracting talent. Since many industries are planning to invest in Amaravati and elsewhere in the state, there will be a lot of employment potential for our students.

Q4. Is the university also planning to offer M.Tech programmes this year along with the B.Tech?

Ans: We are offering 5-year Integrated M.Tech (Software Engineering) programme this year. The two-year PG M.Tech programmes will be started later.

Q5. According to you, which engineering programmes are more in demand now days and why?

Ans: In my opinion, students have to choose an engineering branch which they are passionate about. All the branches of engineering VIT offers have a good job demand. If a student performs well and graduates from a good university, then placement will not be a problem.

Q6. Will twinning programmes be offered at VIT-AP too?

Ans: Yes the International Transfer Programmes (ITP) will be offered at VIT-AP also. Students can study for 2 years at VIT-AP and 2 years at our partner universities abroad and get a bachelor’s degree abroad. Our partner universities are in USA, UK and Australia. They include prestigious universities like Purdue University, Australian National University, Rochester Institute of Technology, etc.

Q7. Can you please shed some light on the facilities the new campus will offer for students?

Ans: The institute offers world-class facilities to students which include labs, project spaces, library and research centres, amenities like sports facilities, hostel, canteen, transport, and other support services of high quality.

Q8. What would be your challenge and aspiration as the head of the new campus?

Ans: We aspire to make VIT-AP as a world-class university. We will make this happen because of our rich experience of 33 years of providing high quality education at VIT-Vellore and VIT-Chennai.

Q9. As per various research, around 80% of the engineering graduates are not industry-ready and employable. What is your take on this and how do we address this challenge?

Ans: At VIT-Vellore, we hold the Limca records for the highest number of on-campus placements. This has been possible year over year, because of the quality of our graduates. We provide curriculum for applied learning which is based on industry inputs.  The courses are taught by eminent professors. We provide high quality teaching-learning process and world-class lab facilities. Since the industry experts are involved in designing our curriculum and in teaching, VIT graduates are industry-ready, resulting in high placements. The same concept will be followed in VIT-AP also. At VIT-AP, the co-op programme (industry internship experience) will be available to all the students.

Q10. What according to you is the USP of VIT-AP University that will set it apart from other engineering institutes?

Ans: Students at VIT-AP will have the opportunity to learn by doing ie. Project Based Learning (PBL). PBL will be given utmost importance because of our curriculum for applied learning. At VIT-AP, the co-op programme (industry internship experience) is a unique element of our education system. Experts from industry will not only participate in curriculum design but will also directly teach part of the syllabus.

Q11. Any message for engineering aspirants?

Ans:  It is quite important that the students choose a good institution. The branch of engineering you choose is less important, as all major branches of engineering have good career potential. Regardless of the branch of study, whichever students perform well by applying the concepts with a good understanding of basics will shine well in their respective careers.
