The Indian Institute of Science has made its presence felt in the international arena as it ranks eighth among the top 10 small universities of the world. Times Higher Education Rankings was released recently, in which IISc became the first Indian university to have made its way to the top 10 universities of the world. These rankings are for the small universities of the world. Small universities means those having less than 5, 000 students.
IISc Bangalore is also among the second highest ranked university in Asia and also holds the credential of being the only Indian university in the list of 20. IISc was set up in 1909 with the combined efforts of Jamsetji Nussarwanji Tata, Maharaja of Mysore and Government of India. The focus of IISc, which is a public university, is to undertake scientific research and provide quality higher education. Currently, more than 3,000 students are enrolled in the university for various post graduate and Ph.D programmes.
The university had won laurels in 2015-16, when it had become the first Indian institute to be ranked among the top 100 in ‘The World University Rankings’ for engineering and technology at 99th position.
Hailing the accomplishment of the university, Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Prakash Javadekar, stated that it is good news that one of the Indian universities is ranked among the top 10 global universities of the world.
Chief Minister of Karnataka Siddaramaiah conveyed his best wishes through his tweet in which he said, “Hearty congratulations to the faculty, students and patrons of @iiscbangalore for this achievement! The state & country stand proud today!”
The top position is held by California Institute of Technology (CalTech) USA. Among the three French Universities, which also made their presence felt in the global arena are École Normale Supérieure (2nd ranks), École Polytechnique (4th Rank), École Normale Supérieure de Lyon (7th rank). Pohang University of Science and Technology was ranked second.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati was ranked 14th in the Times Higher Education rankings while Savitribai Phule Pune University was ranked 18th in 2016. Both the institutes failed to be among the top 20 best small universities of the world.
